The name got prominence in 16th Century. Later the word normalised with Latin word "Autumnus". Autumn season comes after summer and before the starting of winter season in northern hemisphere. Hindi meaning of autumn season is शरद ऋतु . It ranges from September 20 to November 20 in Northern hemisphere.
